It has turned into one of those days, the kind where it’s better not to blog than to say anything at all. This is one of the newest holgas. 3 rolls turned in earlier this week, completely experimental though so who knows if anything will be posted.

A while back I posted on how I was in a sewing binge and was making these little owls. Then I took a break from the owls to finish the baby blanket. A couple weeks ago I finished up my owl binge. I completed 12 little owls in different colors and with different faces. Each no bigger than 3inches tall. These little guys were used to decorate some tall flowers at my baby shower. The shower itself wasn’t an owl theme but they brought some of the baby room to Chicago to celebrate with us.
I wasn’t real sure what I was going to do w/ all these owls. For a while I toyed around with the idea of turning them into a mobile for the baby room. I wasn’t sure it would get done before baby and figured it definitely wouldn’t after he comes. Until last weekend when I wandered by the guest room, randomly turned in and pulled out my wire. I started freeform bending some steel and copper wire just to see what I came up with. Then I dug out some fun beads that would match and some fishing line.
The next thing I knew it was over 2 hours later and I had a little owl mobile completed. It uses 8 of the 12 owls, an African wedding bead, some fancy charolette Czech beads, and other miscellaneous beads from my stash. It’s definitely not a toy. But we hung it in the babe’s room out of reach from little hands.
It was a fun project to make, and I’m thrilled that its completed. I’m actually a bit shocked at how it just flowed out of me w/out me having to think too much about it. I do miss wirework and hammering as well as beads, but they just aren’t on my radar right now. I’m not putting the fabric away quite yet. I have some fun ideas for some bigger projects, not owls, but maybe fish, bugs, or even a rocket ship. We’ll see how things go once the little guy decides to join us.

::I didn’t take this weeks pic, I’m not even sure it’s a holga, it might be a lomo. Mom took it in the Bahamas a few years back.
::Today is one of those long grouchy days
::Instead of posting about what’s made me grouchy I’m going to list what’s made this day better.
::Digging through family pics from 2006, combo of Montana and Jamaica
::Changing my desktop wallpaper to one of the sunset Jamaica pics
::Going home for lunch and eating on the deck
::looking forward to class tonight…need to find something comfy to wear
::Thinking about strawberry rhubarb pie, and maybe raiding a nearby patch to make one this weekend.
::Having a friend check in on me to make sure I’m doing ok
::I’m wishing i was in this pic right now, w/ a tropical boozy drink in my hand
::Only 3 and a half weeks left
::mmmm back to strawberry rhubarb pie

I’m slowly playing catch up with holga photos. There are a few new ones uploaded last night from this past Christmas weekend. Christmas eve and Christmas day were very snowy this year. The really beautiful kind of snowy, with big fat flakes that twirl around you. They were the kind of days that made you glad you didn’t have to go anywhere or do anything except watch the pretty snow. I went out those days and walked around the yard of both my parent’s and Chris’s parents homes snapping holgas in the snow. I was hoping to get an image showing the flakes but didn’t come up with much. So I thought until I was cleaning up this image. I liked it anyway, not sure why, the vignetting, or the contrast in lines and colors.
It took me a while to notice that the white blurs or smudges are actually snow flakes! I had first thought they were dust scanned in from when I scanned the images. But now I’m sure they are snow flakes, which means mission accomplished even though it took me 5 months to realize it!

Recently Miranda bought her first Holga…I’ve finally gotten her hooked! And now I have a holga buddy. =0) From what I’ve heard she’s only shot one roll, but from what I’ve seen she has some really cool results. This week she leaves for a trip to Greece and Turkey, and then when she gets back she’s traveling CA and hitting up Yosemite w/ some friends of ours. All of this will be awesome and will also make for fantastic holga shooting. I am super jealous of these big plans. I have shot two and a half rolls this year and have gotten some encouraging results. I plan to shoot a ton of baby pics once he comes in May. I’ve seen some really amazing work on the web of shots people took of their kids and I’m anxious to try it out.
Last week Miranda started Holga Wednesdays on her blog and I liked the idea enough to join her. So we’ll both be posting recent/archived holga shots every Wednesday. This weeks shot is again back from October during our trip to Chicago. Miranda’s blog is centered around completeing the 101 Things to Do before you Die. One of the things on the list is go to the top of the tallest buildings. So we spent a day in Chicago at the Sears/Willis Tower. The new Ledge on the Sky Deck was open so that we could walk into a plastic box extending out from the building and look 1353 feet down on to South Wacker Drive. It was definitely a strange feeling walking out on to that piece of plastic. Makes your knees turn to jelly, but worth all the photo opportunities. This was one of my faves of my hand on the bottom of the box, below it you can make out the square roof tops of the surrounding buildings. If you peer down between the roof tops you can make out a tiny amount of the street below.
In other Holga news, I was browsing toycamera.com’s forum and found a sneak peak at Light Leaks issue 17. The second page of the sneak peak shows the advertisement for Holgapalooza 2010. Only three themes this year but they’re kinda exciting. Creatures, Road Side Attractions, and Nudes. Nudes could be totally cool in holga form. I’m anxious to see what might be out there and kinda wish I were on the inside to see what all was submitted. I’m not sure I’ll be taking any nude photos, not sure where I could get them developed, but I can appreciate a tastefully taken photograph and find the idea intriguing.
