learning
It’s funny how much a little change in routine can lift my mood so drastically. Recently I was reminded how much I enjoy research and the particular area I majored in in college. I picked up a side project at work that is a fairly routine technique in the lab, but completely new to me. I spent a few days discussing the project and learning the theory behind what is going on in a tiny little tube of liquid the size of a drop. I would walk away from these discussions mentally exhausted but rejuvenated at the same time. And for the rest of the day I’d mentally picture small molecules binding together and cleaving and multipling as they are supposed to in that little drop. It’s reminded me why I liked school and how much I enjoyed learning. It feels refreshing to be reminded of school and to have my brain pummelled with new information and to understand and build on the facts I already have. This week I put the new theories to the test and was successful in the first step of a new project. I know that it was an easy first step but it is new and felt good to accomplish successfully on the first try.
The picture is from last weekend’s fireworks in Naperville. We didn’t make it into Ribfest…we made it to the three half mile lines to get in and kept walking to the downtown area and had beers. We timed the walk home so that we could watch the fireworks as we walked. It was a great 4th of July and a great firework display. This weekend Mom and Gram are coming down for a beady girly weekend. Gram hasn’t seen the house yet so it’ll be fun to show her around and then sit around w/ some wine and beads. I’m looking forward to working on some flowers!

Glad you had a nice holiday!
I watched our fireworks on TV with the rest of the country, because it’s no fun to watch them alone…
