Spring???

I know it’s too early in the year to really be hoping that Spring is permanently here, but it’s here this weekend and it is infectious!  The sun is out, the temps are chilly but pleasant, the birds are chirping, and my cats are hunkered down next to the door watching them eat.  Last week Mom and I planned out our orders for veggie plants.  She placed hers last weekend and I just placed mine today.  Since that is the main thing I’m thinking about right now I thought I’d share my big garden plans.  My order contains two kinds of tomatoes, I’ll get 3 of each plant some time in early June.  I bought the tomato sweet tangerine and the fourth of july tomato.  I really want to grow some larger tomatoes this year, and last year a friend gave me some golden ones that were amazing!  So I got the sweet tangerine, I’ll give one of my plants to Mom and she’ll give me a couple of hers.

I also ordered some banana peppers which I had last year and they produced like crazy!  And some hot peppers called Mariachis.  Mom got some sweet red peppers that look delish and so we’ll do some swapping out of these as well.  I want to make some pepper relishes some hot and some sweet.  It would go great on roast beef sandwiches or in guacamole.  I also want to make some home made salsas and sauces.  I’m going to learn how to can and preserve fruits and veggies so that we can enjoy the crops all year round.  It will beat trying to find fresh produce to make it in the winter and will save bucks.  Hopefully this years harvest will be plentiful.

I also bought seeds for zucchinis, cucumbers, and soybeans.  I’m completely addicted to edamame and can’t find it at any of our grocery stores.  Funny since we live in the midwest and if the farmers aren’t growing corn they are growing soy beans!  At least I know they should grow well in this climate.  I have it all planned out what will be planted where and I have plans to clean out the back garden so that it will have more space.  I’m thinking April will be a big month for preparing the garden and outside area for spring.  The other part of of gardening I want to learn this year is composting.  It will be a great natural way to fertilize the crops and will also decrease our garbage quantities.  Composting really just makes sense and I’ve been looking around to find the best container for composting that will meet our needs.  So far I’ve been enjoying planting all this and looking forward to getting dirty in April and setting it all up.
