A Crymson Life

Photography

I mentioned a few posts ago that I might be dabbling in the realm of photography, here’s a little bit about that.  Last weekend when the dude showed up he brought some presents from Mom.  She recently bought a new fancy camera and in turn I inherited her Nikon D70, a fancy camera in my eyes and definitely compared to my snap and shoot camera I’ve had for the last few years.  Over the last few months and increased by chatting with Mom and Miranda I’ve had a peaking interest in learning the workings of a camera.  I want to learn about apertures, focal settings, composing photos, all sorts of stuff.  This is the camera I plan to learn this with.
A little bit about the camera in Amy terms, which means how I understand it at this moment.  The Nikon D70 is a digital SLR, single lens reflex.  This basically means that what you see through the view finder is exactly what you get a picture of when you take it.  It has to do with fancy mirror action you can read about here.  Right now I just have the standard lens right now, but I think it will do just fine while I learn.
I’ve found a class at our local community college I think I’ll take.  I also want to buy a book and learn how to use photoshop elements more to it’s potential.  Right now all I know how to do is resize pics.  So far this week I haven’t looked much at the instruction manual.  I’ve gone out shooting pics several times and I’ve just been using the built in settings in the camera.  It is a Nikon which what I had before so the symbols all mean the same.  I’ve put together a small flicker page with the pics I like so far.  These are completely untouched and undoctored, straight out of the camera and uploaded.  They aren’t the quality I’d dream they are, but for a beginner I’m happy with them.  No surprises here that what interests me most to take photos of are flowers or close ups of nature, or my kitties.  I think my favorite shot is of Mira.  She was hanging out w/ me while I tried to photograph some birds through the window.  I like close up pics of small things, I’m instantly drawn and want to go full zoom all the time.  I know that can’t always be the best way to go about things…that’s on my list of wanting to learn.  I also want to learn how to take pics of trees in the wind, or similar shots.  Wide shots of the sky or mountains.  I’m not sure how to go about it, but I know every time I’ve tried I’m not happy w/ the results.
All in all things have been going so far so good in photography.  I’m having fun with it and learning each time I pic up the camera.  This weekend we head down to St. Louis where Chris is in a tournament for his martial arts class.  I’m going to experiment with motion shots and see what I can get.  I also got a toy camera that I’ve been playing with.  More on that soon!

When I was a child, I considered myself as a “student of nature”, I even kept 2 diarys of nature-related stuff which is quite cute to read today, and I so much wanted to have a camera with a zoom function for flowers. I wanted these pictures for accompanying my writings. smile So, I can definitely understand that you are drawn to this field! I love your flower pictures. What’s that pipe in the background of the 1st bleeding heart? That’s a cool shot! And I love the sun shining through the leafs of the 2nd bleeding heart shot! Can’t wait to see your future pics!

Thanks BE!  The pipe attaches to our gutter so that all the rain water off the house doesn’t drain into the basement, it goes out into the yard and waters some flowers!  It’s ugly, I need to redo it so that it’s not such an eye sore.

I found it cool! Not ugly at all! Something of the “civilized world” is meandering through nature ... You have to look at it as an art picture with a message! smile

My favorite was the bumble bee in the flowers and the single tulip with the dew on it… beautiful! Great job so far!
