A Crymson Life

#27 attempting a pattern

Number 27 on my list of 29 plus one is to follow a pattern from start to finish.  This is so so so difficult for me.  I want to alter, tweak, add, and change things to make it my piece or to turn it into something else.  I found this amazing blog a few months back with tons of crochet pattens all of which I want to try.  If I had time and about eight more hands I’d have so much crocheted things to show off.  The first pattern of her’s I decided to try out are her advent baby socks.  It took a while to get used to following a crochet pattern, and even longer to get used to crocheting with such a small hook.  I used Silk Panda yarn which is part bamboo and part wool, it’s extremely soft and very lovely to touch.  As I worked on the first sock I would stop and literally have to talk myself into finishing the sock according to pattern.  I had a bunch of fun ideas to alter it oh so slightly.  For example, how fun would it be w/ beads around the edge of the sock, something dangley and sparkley.  Or maybe some furry yarn along the top to make it look like a Christmas stocking, or how about a bigger version of the sock and have it be an actual Christmas stocking, or a slightly smaller version and they could be stocking ornaments.  Lots of ideas were flowing.  But I pent them up, set them aside and finished the sock.

Then I stepped back and looked at it, something was fishy, not quite right around the ankle.  I reread the pattern, could not figure out what went wrong. So I started sock number two, made it slightly smaller in diameter, got to the ankle and slowly reread and crocheted via the pattern.  It still felt wrong, it felt like I was repeating myself from the first time.  So I took out what I did and crocheted how I thought it should go.  It still isn’t right.  I did decide to use furry yarn along the top which hides the funky ankle very well.  But it’s there and it’s wrong and damn it its bugging me.  I’ve brooded and brain stormed.  I think I’ve come up with an idea to get it right.  Maybe I just finally read the pattern correctly, we’ll find out when I start sock number three.

I’m considering this task accomplished.  I did in fact complete a sock according to the pattern as I saw it.  When I added this to my list I did think that mess ups wouldn’t count as going against the pattern.  If this were the case I may never cross it off.

Congrats for following a pattern from start to end. Mess-ups do not count, of course. Can’t wait to see more of these cuties!

Hurray! I’m so proud - my little socks have step-brothers and sisters! I feel a little bit weepy. Don’t mock that sock: I think it’s beautiful. I will hear nothing said against it.

If that’s your first attempt at following a pattern, then you should be really happy. It looks great. You might need a couple of extra stitches when you start to crochet the shaft of the sock - it seems to pinch in a little bit and that’s what makes the heel look a bit off-centre. Do remember that crochet is the craft of Those Who Fly By The Seat of Their Pants: wriggle and adjust the pattern till it works for you. Yarn weight and texture will influence how these little sock look because the yarn is so thin and the stitches are so small - every variation of tension or stitching will have an effect. Believe me, by the time you’re on your fourth or fifth, you’ll have got the hang of it and will have figured out little tricks to adjust the sock so it looks good.

I only wish I were nearby to give you hand - I’ll just have to cyberstalk (cybersock you?) and see how you’re getting on!
Best wishes,
Olivia, the Gingerbread Lady

Hello Crymson Flower - such a lovely name, so poetic. My moniker had to be something edible of course (should say something about my priorities.)

Especially for you grin I’ve filmed a highly unprofessional video and uploaded it on to YouTube in two parts. The links have been included in the pattern on my blog. http://gingerschatz.blogspot.com/2010/07/pattern-advent-baby-socks.html
Scroll down to where the heel starts and you’ll see the linkies.
I hope this helps!

Thanks Olivia!  the videos were great and I figured out where I went wrong.  Now just need to find time to start sock number 3.  I’ll post pics of any more I get completed for your cybersocking convenience.  =)
