A Crymson Life

#2 take a class… I learned to knit!

#2 on my list of 29 plus 1 is to take a class.  This was one of those things on my list that I knew I wanted to do but really didn’t know what kind of class I wanted to take.  I was really leaning toward a cooking class through the community college.  And then I’d start thinking about a sewing class so maybe that would help me finish my Rock Quilt and perhaps make a fun bag or something.  But when Ewe-Nique yarns sent me an email of their spring classes and beginners knitting was on the list my mind was set.

It was a two day class but I could only make it to the first class.  So I spent the two hours of class learning, and didn’t get anything done on my project.  I learned to cast on, knit, purl, and how to alternate the two, and I learned to bind off.  Armed with my new knowledge I did what I do best, pick a project that’s not really best for beginners.  Mom found this pattern for a scarf and it looked a bit more fun to work on than just a plain jane knit scarf.  I had to do a little googleing to figure out how to decrease, switch needles, and increase.  The increase still trips me up a little bit.  I spent a day starting and restarting this scarf.  I think I ripped it out and started from scratch at least 7 times.  I think I needed to make every mistake possible before I could get started.  I can now even kinda unknit!  ha!  But I finally got going and the pic shows my progress up through yesterday morning.

Really I haven’t gotten very far.  I did make the scarf a bit narrower than the pattern.  Mostly b/c I don’t need another wide heavy winter scarf, although now I’m rethinking it and maybe it should be wider.  R took one of his freaky long naps yesterday and I spent that precious time knitting away.  I’ve now done the repeat about 4 times and I’m getting more of a feel for how the scarf will turn out.  I thought there would be more of a ruffle to it.  Which I think there could be if I tightened up my garter stitch areas.  I’ve been intentionally making my stitches loose since I was pulling them way too tight before.  I’m not really sure this scarf will get finished but I’m learning a ton experimenting with it.  I’m not sure what I’ll do with my new found knitting knowledge.  Most of my knitting ambitions are for cold weather and now that spring is around the corner I’m not thinking about warm socks and mittens and cowls.  I did think maybe a simple cotton tank top might be an interesting project.  Otherwise with interesting ideas for afghans have been popping into my head, combining knitting and crochet motifs.  But I promise M…I’ll finish the Rock Quilt before I start another blanket.

Just saw this! As far as I can see from the pic, your knitting looks great. Is it a tencel yarn? It shines so much!
Seeing stitch patterns evolve is the most fun part regarding knitting and crocheting. The result will always be different due to yarn choice! So much fun! I love following stitch patterns, it is the most relaxing kind of knitting for me.
I can’t wait to see all your knitting plans come into being. But I also know from my own experience that not all plans can be implemented ...
