Renn Fair
The Renn Fair this weekend was great. Chris and I got there around 1 and immediately started looking around. We found a leather shop that we always admire. The artist makes very intricate masks from leather, most of them just cover the eyes and then form a crown of some sort. They are very cool. There was another leather artist there that made journals, purses and other small objects from leather. On each object she builds a face with eyes out of folds in the leather. It was very different and very cool work. After a bit we met up with Jon and Theresa. It was very hot and humid so Theresa and I each bought a fan. This was by far my best Renn Fair purchase! We used it the entire day and when we go back I’ll bring it with. The four of us had a really good time, we spent a good chunk of it by Vegetable Justice. Both Chris and Jon threw tomatoes at the guys in the stocks. They were pretty funny although they really couldn’t come up with any good jokes about them. The guy just kept calling Chris a frat boy. I really enjoyed the glass blowing demonstration. This is really a cool process, and the glass workers must have been baking next to those ovens. But the art that they made was really beautiful. For a late lunch Chris had a huge turkey leg and I had shepherds pie, both were very good, but I’d probably get a turkey leg if we ate there again. They’re fun! Chris bought a huge mug made from black walnut. It’s very cool and came with a ticket that we took up to the bar and they filled it up 2/3s with beer. Big mugs are fun when they’re filled with beer!
I wore my Ring of ForgetmeNots and it held up great! The weight didn’t bother me at all, toward the end of the evening I thought it might have been giving me a headache, but I think it was more the heat and dehydration that caused it. I definitely did notice an increase in beaded jewelry and the presence of beads in the shops. I was a little disappointed by the quality of it. One lady I did admire was selling really pretty peyote bracelets and seemed to be doing very well. I picked up her card and when I got home realized that she displays her work and buys her beads from a bead shop that is close to mom and dads. It’s probably my favorite bead store in that area. Small world! It did make me feel good that if they could do it so can I. So this week I’m writing to the director of the fair to see what all is needed to become a merchant.
On Sunday we were lazy all morning. I am very inspired from looking at all the art at the fair and did some research about more metalsmithing. After we got home I brainstormed up some really great flower ideas. haha, I ended up with too much inspiration at once, and ended up overloading myself. Instead I went out for a walk and then read my book. This weekend Chris is at a bachelor party so I invited Mom down to visit a bead store and to work on our wire work. Now it sounds like Dad and Jed will be coming too so it should be a fun weekend.
