A Crymson Life

Scary Movie Month 09 Finale!!!!

Ending another October of Halloween themed films:

Suspiria: A 70’s ish creepfest about a girl entering a foreign school where students are mysteriously vanishing. Some really impressive visual effects for the time and heavy percussions pacing the soundtrack - even in uneventful scenes - make this a precursor to more modern scares. Amy got scared with this one =o). 4 out of 5 rooms full of barbed wire.

The Simpsons Halloween 5-8: A great fallback watch for those nights we need a break. Great laughs. 4.5 out of 5 Zombie Flanders.

Monster vs Aliens: Mutant Pumpkin episode: Follow-up Halloween special for TV, short episode featuring all the characters and voices from the movie. 4 out of 5 candy-induced explosions.

It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown: The classic annual Halloween special, featuring the Peanuts gang partying, Linus waiting for the Great Pumpkin and of course Snoopy dueling the Red Baron. Who doesn’t love this? 5 out of 5 football place kicks pulled.

The Monster Squad: Dracula, The Wolfman, The Creature from the Black Lagoon, The Mummy, and The Frankenstein monster come to town and it’s up to a group of kids to send them packing. Actually some well-done effects and costumes, one of those 80s kids movies with some heart to it where it could have been a favorite growing up with. 4 out of 5 dorkings.

Book Of Blood: Based on Clive Barker’s novel about a haunted flat being investigated by paranormal researchers. Complete with some unique characters and twists, this film was a thorough scare. Yes, every kind of scary. (Amy did not watch, Chris will have nightmares for weeks). 5 out of 5 fountains of blood.

Underworld: Another favorite around the house about a tug-of-war between warring vampire and werewolf clans. Kate Beckinsale (is hot) leads as a vampire deathdealer in an action-packed buttkicker. 3.5 out of 5 faces sliced off.

Manos: the Hands of Fate (MST3K): First, the good: A family lost in the desert at night could make for freaky situation. The bad: bad acting, bad filming, bad editing, bad story, dumb dialogue, long pauses, visible zippers on the antagonists, not to mention this was made by a fertilizer salesman, Manos is pretty bad all around and tends to reside at the IMDB bottom 100. The Mystery Science Theater guys run miles all over this movie in the commentary and make for a good round of laughs. 1 out of 5 weird smothering deaths for the movie, 3.5 out of 5 weird extended all-girl fights for the MST3K episode.
