why did the turkeys cross the road?

Saturday morning we didn’t sleep well and both of us felt like we were coming down with colds. The remedy for when both of us feel crappy is laying on the couch in the basement w/ the fireplace on under blankets, and alternating between watching movies and playing video games. So this was what we were doing when I noticed Mira peeking out the shutters of the back door. Not unusual for her. What was unusual was the huge moving shadow peeking right back at her!!! It took a few moments for it to process, and then I pointed it out to Chris. He slowly opened the shutters and we found TWO huge wild turkeys hanging out on our patio under the deck right up by the door.
I quickly ran and grabbed my cameras, digital and holga. Unfortunately, the birds retreated too far too quickly for me to snap any holga photos. That would have been really cool. But the digital pics are fun, and kinda show how big they were. The birds went back to the far end of the yard and then slowly came back up to the house. The went around to the front and crossed the street. That was the last I saw of them. Chris and I aren’t hunters, but there are lots of hunters in the area…and thanksgiving is just next week!!!

We’re hosting thanksgiving again this year and I’m very excited. Spare moments on the internet consist of me searching for recipes and tips. And when Chris isn’t looking I’m watching food network! I think pretty much everything is decided. Turkey is going to be cooked the same as last year. Might do something new w/ the stuffing. Sweet potatoes and cranberry sauce are going to be the same. I found a fun recipe for garlicy mashed potatoes so that’ll be something new. Everything else someone is bringing. Now I just need to lay out a game plan of what should happen when…and then the dreaded grocery list. Funny that I’m so not in the mood to cook anything except thanksgiving dinner! =)

those are fun turkey pics…. I can’t wait to come eat a turkey with you soon. I’m glad it isn’t one of these though. They look too happy peaking in your windows!

There are a ton of random turkeys up by Dad’s place. Last time I was standing there all of the sudden it sounded like there was a party outside. There was a turkey party.

Love the 2nd picture because it shows the open wings. I have never seen wild turkeys.
Preparations for Thanksgiving sound like a lot of fun! By the way, instead of cranberries it is more common to serve lingonberries with game or similar meat. We enjoyed it on our vacation, it was very yummy and I guess it might be quite similar to cranberries. Note to myself: Look for lingonberries or cranberries for a sauce ...
