A Crymson Life

“I only made out with him because torturing him didn’t work.”

Hello fellow Losties!  After talking about it for the past six months I’ve finally started rewatching the Lost series.  I figure for kicks and giggles I’ll post random thoughts or observations I may have while watching the early episodes w/ the hindsight I now have.  That is if I have any thoughts or observations.
I’ve made it throught the first 8 episodes, the first two being the hugest most awesomest pilot ever.  I’d forgotten about the pilot.  About how people were ripped from their seats and pulled back out of the plane.  Or pulled straight up into the ceiling of the plane only to land on the floor w/ a thud.  Beyond the special effects this two part pilot literally gives us an introduction to all the key players of the season and seasons to come.  Even if some characters only have two or three lines, we get a glimpse of what everyone will become.
The first 8 episodes are the first two disks in season 1.  After each disk I watched any commentaries they offered for the episodes.  I watched them for both pilot episodes, and for the moth, which is the episode we learn that Charlie is a junkie.  The moth commentary actually had Dominic Monaghan w/ the writers and that was a riot to listen to.
Here a few obersevations of things I’d forgotten about the show/characters, as well as some trivia I picked up from the commentaries and some from IMDB.

~It spontaneously rained a lot in season 1 on the island.  I’m not sure when that stopped but haven’t noticed it in a few seasons.
~In the commentaries the writers and Dominic (so I’m assuming everyone) refer to Matthew Fox as “Foxie.”  Not as an adjective but as a nic name.
~Not sure how soon after season one they recorded the commentaries but they hinted at getting rid of Charlie during the pilot commentary.
~Claire is into astrology and offers to draw Kate’s chart.
~In episode 3, Tabula Rasa, the signal party (Kate, Sayid, Sawyer, Charlie, Shannon, and Boone) return after discovering Rousseau’s repeating message.  They have a group disscussion and decide to lie to the others about the message.  A disscussion very similar to when the 6 get off the island and decide to lie.  Both were lies to protect the others.
~Charlie’s band was orginnally called “the Petting Zoo” but had to be changed to Drive Shaft b/c a band already existed called “the Petting Zoo”.
~In the original script Jack would have died in pilot by the smoke monster.  The network didn’t like it so they changed the script so the pilot died instead.  In the orginal script Kate would have taken on the leadship role.
~The fateful journey, Oceanic Flight 815 (Sydney to Los Angeles), flew on September 22nd 2004. This was the pilot episode’s airdate on US television’s ABC network.
~Sawyer shoots a polar bear.

Love the comments so far! And I believe they call Jack that because he is both Foxie and a Fox. Yum!

And what was the hint about Charlie?

And PS - Thank goodness for a Kate less leadership!

One of the writers just sort of jokingly said maybe we’ll get rid of Charlie too.  They had been talking about how Boone would die, and about his character.  I never noticed it before but they purposely made Boone hopelessly helpless.  He just can’t do anything right.

I agree about Kate!  yikes that would have been annoying.  It’s funny b/c originally most of the characters were supposed to be older and more mature in their relationships/careers.  ie, Kate would be a recent divorcee, Sawyer more of a suit and tie con man.  Some of the lines orginally written for Kate were taken on by Rose.

I just realized that Tabula Rasa which means Blank Slate in Latin was also the name of an episode of Buffy. Willow did a spell where everyone forgot everything. How cool that finally the little latin I’ve picked up from Buffy and The West Wing are finally being put to good use!

And also, I remember getting chills when they discovered the recording of Rousseau’s message. Creepy.
