christmas from Germany

One of my very favorite surprises is when I get a box in the mail from Germany. BE and I have been consistent penpals for maybe 4 years now and on occasion we enjoy sending each other hand made gifts and other goodies. This years package came a few days ago and I’ve still excited about it now. She has been knitting for the past year and this year has taken on some amazing projects, involving lace knitting shawls and scarves. It looks amazing in pictures through the internet but to actually see and feel the intricate lace pattern is a completely different story. She made “Greta Garbo Passepartout,” which is pictured to the right, or you can see more pictures on her blog. It’s a one repeat of a patten and if you look closely at the bottom you can see the silver beads she knitted in. And she matted it in cardboard so that it is framed. The yarn she used is a beautiful wine/mulberry color that she’d used in a shawl she made recently. I still can’t hardly imagine knitting this (so far knitting has eluded me) let alone an entire shawl! The next time I’m up buying frames which should be soon I plan to frame it and hang it in the living room.

The first thing I noticed opening the package was the smell of chocolate. Germany has awesome chocolate. It’s so smooth and delightful. This year she sent us two large chocolate bars, one milk and one dark. We haven’t opened them yet, but I think about them a lot so they won’t last long. Neither will the Swiss hot chocolate mix that was also sent. In fact I have a date with it this Friday while Chris is out w/ his bud, I will be enjoying some hot chocolate and relaxing. Hopefully with some new yarn for my next project.
