A Crymson Life

last supper

I’m a big Top Chef fan, and I was bummed when allstars ended but super excited for Richard who I was routing for the entire season. I can’t imagine what these chefs go through for our entertainment on this program. This seasons challenges seemed harder and more thought through. I thought the second to last challenge was particularly interesting when they had to cook 3 famous chefs their last meal. It got me thinking…what would I choose for my last meal?
What a difficult decision. Unlike the chefs on Top Chef I don’t really have any childhood meals that stick out or that I crave. I do have a lot of things I like to eat.

First course would open with a salad. But not just any salad, the Strawberry Fields salad from the Wild Dog Grille in Douglas Michigan. C and I were vacationing in the area two summers ago and stopped here for lunch. AWESOME bar and restaurant. They had superb beer and knowledge about good beer, and their food was amazing. Not the typical bar food, but high end delicious food that makes my mouth water thinking about it. Before my main course I got a side salad with their made from scratch strawberry poppyseed dressing and it was amazing. To this day I remember that dressing. I haven’t actually had their strawberry fields salad but I’m willing to bet its damn good and would be an excellent way to kick off this meal.

Second course would be a rainbow roll and edamame from Sushigawa here in P-town. For the nonsushi eaters a rainbow roll is a california roll with sashimi slices over the top in salmon, tuna, and snapper. I would have mine all in salmon and snapper. I perfer tuna when cooked but I love salmon raw. YUM! The first and second courses would be served with a cold glass/bottle of Santa Margherita pinot grigio.

Third course would be a roasted prime rib roast. It would include some sort of wild mushroom ragout and fresh bread to sop up the juices. The veggie would be roasted asparagus and green beans mixed. I don’t have an exact recipe for this, it’s something similar to a meal Mom cooked for Christmas a few years back. I still think about that meal, and obviously thought it was good. This would be served with a nice old vine zinfandel. I don’t have a specific one in mind but I’m thinking higher price range since this is my last meal.

Fourth and final course, sigh, all the directions that could be taken here. I’m guessing I’m pretty stuffed by this point. I’m thinking some melt in your mouth dark chocolate pieces to go with the remaining red wine. Maybe a bite or two of some lemon curd tartlets.

OK so I thought I wouldn’t be able to come up with anything but I think I just combined everything I love to eat into one meal. Not real sure how each course blends with the next, but I don’t think it matters. Now I’m hungry!!

When? I’ll be there? wink

The rainbow rolls look awesome but I have never eaten raw fish. So this would be a challenge. But I would love to taste “strawberry fields forever”!!! Mmmmh, a strawberry dressing. Yum! Additionally, I am so curious about your wines and that dinner would be a great occasion to satisfy this curiosity.

Now I am hungry, too! And thirsty!
