preholiday adventures
Today I forgot my unwritten rule for Thanksgiving week….don’t go to the grocery store the week before Thanksgiving! Every grocery store across America is crazy busy with people picking out sweet potatoes, turkeys, trying to find odd ingredients to make their stuffings, and desserts. I almost ran into the same woman three times b/c she was in her own world of thanksgiving prep. I didn’t realize my mistake until it was too late, I needed to do my own last minute food shopping to the the fixings for pumpkin crunch. It is currently in the oven making my house smell wonderful.
The reality that Thanksgiving really is in less than 48 hours is still sort of surreal, although the grocery store experience definitely made it sink in a bit. Huge signs above a stacked pile of frozen turkeys announcing low prices, and just next to it another pile of hams. The last few years major stores across the country have been bringing their Christmas goods out earlier and earlier. Back in the day (I’m only 26!) Christmas season didn’t start until the day after Thanksgiving. This year I saw Christmas decorations as early as July, and they were full blown every where in October right next to the Halloween costumes. No wonder it doesn’t feel like thanksgiving to me. I was getting excited for Christmas in October, fought off the urge, and now I’m completely eh about the holidays. Hopefully this will change on Thursday, when we’re hanging out nibbling on nothing but yummy foods and surrounding ourselves with family. That is my brief rant and now I’m done. I have much to be thankful for this year, and I’m glad to be thankful for everything.
I hope everyone has a wonderful beginning of the holiday season, don’t eat too much, and drive safe.

Christmas decorations are beginning earlier and earlier in the stores here, too. But fortunately not in July! It starts in September which I still consider to be early. When I was young(er), I think it started in November or October. And we did not have Halloween then ...
