A Crymson Life

tailgating at UofI

This weekend was all about football and tailgating and friends.  We were invited to join a group of friends to go see the University of Illinois Fighting Illini play Ohio State on Saturday.  Game time was 11am, and so we left at 530am to get there by 7am and start tailgating.  I can’t believe I made it through 4 years of college and never tailgated!  Although Western really isn’t known for it’s football.
It was a great experience and I’m glad we went.  People went all out, wigs and costumes, face paint.  It was really really cold so there were fire pits and grills going nonstop.  People were playing football, and bags to keep the blood flowing.  They were huddled under blankets in tents to keep warm.  And of course everyone was drinking and eating tons of food.
The game itself was great.  We had great seats in the third row, although at times it was hard to see around the Press.  Unfortunately, the Illini didn’t win, but it was still great fun.

Tailgating is basically the preparty to the game.  People drink, and normally get really drunk, before the game b/c a lot of times there may not be booze allowed in the stadium.  It’s a big tradition with the big colleges and profootball fans.  You have to be really into it though b/c it can get really really cold.  It had to have been below freezing with the windchill on Saturday.

They call it tailgating b/c everything is brought in and set up in the tailgate of your truck.
