week in scary movies
Invasion of the Body Snatchers 1956: The first of several versions of this film. It was probably pretty spooky back in the fifties, lots of references to the political atmosphere of the times. We haven’t watched the 70ies version yet to compare and contrast but it has Donald Sutherland w/ an afro so that’s scary enough to check out soon. 4 out of 5 seed pods
Quarantine: Completely in the first person through a tv camera it can get both spooky and annoying. Also similar themes to the Blair Witch Project which I find to be way way more spookier…maybe b/c they were the first. They were just a few notches away from being something different from the norm and very creepy, it just couldn’t pull through in the end. That said I did in fact jump a couple times and even dreamt of zombies that night. 3.5 out of 5 rabid like rats.
Carnival of Souls: An spooky film about a girl who experiences hallucinations following a car accident. There is some creepy organ music throughout and some memorably haunting scenes that make for what was probably a solid horror movie in it’s time. 4 out of 5 ghost dances.
The Frighteners: For the last few years this was always on my list of fun Halloween movies to watch during scary movie month. We watched it earlier this week and I just realized it’s really not the great movie I was making it out to be in my head. It’s not a bad movie, in fact it has a sorta creepy story. And I love Michael J Fox. Its just not the light hearted almost kids movie my memory was making out to be. I’d watch it again no problems its just not as high up on my list any more. 3 out of 5 out of body inducing freezings.
Let the Right One In: A Norwegian film release in 2008 about a bullied young boy who finds friendship in a odd young girl who turns out to be a vampire. It’s a different spin on the typical vampire flicks especially in the twilight world we live in now. I liked this film, it was dark and violent with out the typical hollywood influence. Not necessarily scary but still intense. 4.5 out of 5 rubrics cubes.
Shawn of the Dead: A classic, and fave in our house. We watch it at least once every October and giggle through out the entire movie. It still stands at 5 out of 5 Winchesters.
28 Days Later: Just a well made zombie film, from the acting to the music. It explores the evils of a zombie like virus called Rage and then the evils of the humans the survive the virus. If you haven’t seen it yet…its a must see. 5 out of 5 rage infected monkeys.
Nosferatu: Supposedly a classic that is the first Dracula film. Probably creepy at the time, but we couldn’t get into it. It was interesting to see a silent film and how much the music can affect the film. Unfortunately the music reminded us of a video game. 2.5 out of 5 rat filled coffins.
